What BK means is the hub on your prop is spinning free of the blades. There is a rubber bushing in there that wears out over time. It is designed to protect the motor if you hit something in the water. The bushing lets go so you don't damage the motor. You can have the prop re-hubbed at most Marine dealers for about $40-50.

Marine dealer don't fix props, they send them to prop shops. I always deal direct with a prop shop.

Sorry, Lindy explained it in more detail, that's what I meant by a spun prop.

Hmm - those are classical symptoms of a spun hub. Have you drained the oil from the lower unit? Check and see if there are any metal filings in the L/U. I guess it could be worn gears. You haven't removed that little Phillips Head pivot pin, have you?

Re: lower unit problems please help!!!

are yoou shifting manually or with remote controls? also when this happens, does the motor rev up uncontrollably?

i had the same thing happen to me a month ago. I thought the shear pin had sheared, but i adjusted the shift shaft and the problem went away. This did happen after i turned the clutch dog around

Re: lower unit problems please help!!!

If it isn't the prop hub or drive pin, then it has to be something seriously busted inside. Only a tear-down and inspection will tell.

Re: lower unit problems please help!!!

Well, we can only go by what you tell us. You insist there is nothing wrong with the prop and/or drive pin. So that only leaves catastrophic gear damage, or a broken drive shaft, or stripped splines in the crankshaft.

--OR-- it isn't actually being shifted (linkage) as somebody suggested.

Those are the possibilities. You have to do the inspecting to see which is correct.

There is a small phillips head screw on the side of the gearcase that people love to mistake for the drain plug. They always regret taking it out.
