finding the right engine coupler

I recently got my boat back from a 1 1/2 year experience with a bad mechanic and my coupler went out last weekend on its first run since the new engine was put in. I have an 88 bomber with the 3.0L Mercruiser Alpha 1. When going to order the part by the engine serial I noticed that it is not at all visible on the plate. I can still read everything else on it as well as the drive unit and transom #'s. I don't even want to imagine why its not there but is there any other way before I pull the engine to know exactly which coupler I'll need. Going back to that mechanic is not even an option. Thanks for any help.

Rare to strip a coupler that fast ,are you sure there was oil in the drive.

Without knowing any of the details, my guess is the engine was installed without the drive ever being removed. Some of the hardware under the rear mounts is missing and when everything got tightened down, it was all out of alignment.

Nothing this mechanic did would suprise me. I found several bolts loose and missing and the tensioner arm to power steering pump was not even there.

I don't know if there is anything else that would help. Not even sure how to find the year of this replacement engine.

Thanks
