I was told adding a small amount of cayenne pepper to bottom paint helps control the growth on the bottom of the boat. i was also told adding a large amount (half cup or so) of cayenne pepper to bottom paint helps control the growth on the bottom of the boat.
I don't want to ruin any botton paint before I put it on.
Any one use this method? Does it work?

Old fisherman's tale.

Interlux spokesman:

If Interlux could find a cheap, safe additive for their paints, considering the huge pressure they are under to do so, they'd jump on it. They are stuck with chemicals and pressure from ecologists to find other paint additives.

+1. Waste of time and effort.

story is, you're supposed to add it to regular paint. Why add it to bottom paint?

Adding cayenne pepper to your paint will keep squirrels from chewing on your boat.:D

As much as the initial thought of it sounds great, you must realize paint is meant to seal things up. This means any additives you put in will be sealed from the elements (and the barnacles). If you can tell me what the color yellow smells like, I'll tell you cayenne pepper will smell exactly the same once added to paint. It may, however, keep anyone from drinking you paint before you get to spray it.

Down here on the cape cod "redneck riviera" the locals swear by it, they mix it into cheap paint. Any paint.

If you add cayanne, chili powder, onion powder, and a bit of hamburger, you would have a tasty boat...:D

I'm pretty sure the only living things capsaicin (the stuff that makes cayenne peppers hot) will deter is mammals. So like DBreskin said, unless you have swimming squirrels attacking your boat, it probably wouldn't do any good.

was about to add that, beat me to it! hot stuff will have zero affect on most marine animals that stick to your boat, they just don't taste it!

I sprinkle cayenne pepper on raw (live) oysters and they don't run away screaming. They kinda flinch a little when the lemon juice hits them though.

I wonder if that would keep the sea lions away from my sardines. You might have just given me a million-dollar idea...:D
