Hi all,

There is a lot of information here and I appreciate being able to access it so easily. I have tried to figure out which forum is appropriate to place my question in. I hope I am correct. I have looked for a boat for sometime. I want something that makes my wife happy because she likes to go fast. But also makes me happy in that it can be used for fishing with the kids.

I did find a boat and would greatly appreciate some feedback concerning whether its a good deal or am i making some wrong decisions? In other words, I don't know a darn thing about the value of a boat other than what i have read here.

The boat is a 1971 glastron. I believe it is a swinger model. It is not an outboard. The motor is 160 hp. The seats are ok but have duct tape on them. The floor seems solid to me though it has some stains on the plywood. The body is better than other boats i have seen but on the nose of the bow, repair is needed.

The boat was winterized in 2007 and sat outside for two years. Then moved to a barn to evidently be covered with owl poop. I hired a mechanic that said the motor is good to go. The trailer that comes with it is clean and redone.

From reading the forums I understand some of the sacrifices that would need to be made. I don't mind changing the carpet myself. Since the floor seems secure I would rather avoid doing the complete makeover that I have read about here.

So... questions: without a picture, the asking price is $500.00. Is it worth it?

If the floor isn't spongy am I likely to have ok stringers?

The current floor from the factory has no Fiberglass covering at all. If i buy the boat should I coat the plywood?

Sorry for the long message. I just need some advice from someone smarter than i am about this subject. Thanks much

It sounds like there's easily $500 worth of stuff there. Chances aren't great than an old fiberglass boat that has seen some unprotected outdoor storage wouldn't have some rot in it. However, that doesn't mean you have to tear into it immediately. If the motor runs and there aren't currently soft spots in the floor....run it! You may find out it's the boat for you and you can undertake a rebuild sometime in the future. Or you may find there's another type of boat you like better. For $500 I don't think you can get hurt too bad. Just be aware, catching up on a lot of deferred maintenance on an I/O can be costly (bellows, seals, drive servicing, etc).

Oh come on Bondo, you know that boat's too old for a 470. I'm sure it's an I-6.

Hi all,

I have been proven wrong many times in my life, but I question whether any glass boats were ever made without anything (glass) covering the deck. I suspect it is areplacement or a cover-up.

Thanks for responding. It is a six cylinder. Supposedly it was winterized but still sitting out in the weather for two years concerns me. By looking at the boat it seems to be in great shape for what it is. I was going to have a mechanic that I work with check the engine out but it may be smart to take it to a boat dealer for a check instead.

If that deck is bare plywood it cannot be from the factory. It wouldn't have lasted this long. It is probably a more recent deck replacement or a PO just added an additional layer on top of the original soft deck.

OK thanks much for the info. I have access to the boat all weekend so I am going to start taking up some flooring to see what is underneath. If there is rot and they were trying to hide something I will have no problem giving it back to them and starting the search over. Again thanks. You are all a good resource!

Also drill some random small holes (not thru) in the transom from the inside to find out the state the wood in the transom is in.
Prepare for a stringer/deck, transom rebuild.
