I decided to change my gimbal bearing because it was starting to growl on hard turns. When i pulled the Outdrive about 1 cup of water spilled out from in between the bell housing and outdrive. Is there a seal on the water pump that may be bad or could it be that my bellow ( not the exhaust bellow but the bigger one) may not be properly tightened . I just replaced it last year and my gear lube doesnt seem to have any water in it when i checked by letting a little drip out of the plug on the bottom of the drive. what could it be?

Now here comes the part of gear lube in my u-joint bellow . there is a nice big puddle of it sitting in the bellow. How is this possible ? lol

It is an 81 120 mercruiser.. Any replies would help .thanks

You need a bellows job and the drive pressure tested.
The drive more than likely needs an upper seal set + a yoke if it's been leaking for a while.

Biggest reason for water in your u-joint bellow is the bellow itself is no good. If you definitely have gear lube in your bellow (it may be u joint/gimbal bearing/spline grease mixed with water) then you need to have your pinion bearing carrier checked/resealed. Probably need to have your outdrive pressure tested to make sure it's sealed tight.

For pressure testing, your local marine service center could do it, or you can build a pressure tester yourself by checking out the ADULT'S ONLY sticky at the top of the list of forum questions, then scroll down. A lot of good info. on that sticky. It's best tested with it drained of oil. This allows the added benefit of better checking the condition of the oil beyond what a little drop will show. Good luck.

I will take it to the marine store tomorrow and have it tested. Thanks for your input. It is greatly appreciated.

Pressure AND Vacuum tested. Some seals seal the oil in and some seal the water out.
