tried searching couldnt find what i wanted.
Here's what i want to do
FISH FINDER <> EXTENSION LEAD <> QUICK CONNECT <> BATTERY

two Products below are;
battery end:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NCOKZQ/?tag=you

extension:
http://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tende...3?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1272649696&sr=1-13

I want to leave the terminals on the battery always (inline 3A fuse already on it), then have a quick connect right after it. The extension will plug into here, and lead to my dash where I want my fish finder mounted. The fish finder has 2 wires coming off it, black + red, obviousely.
That 2pin connector has the same 2pin on the other end, where i need to attach to the fish finder.

Is it safe to cut the 2pin end off, and solder the fish finder wires to the appropriate wires on the extension? I see no other way of attaching them together. I don't know much about electronics admittedly, but this seems feasable.

And btw, in the event you attach the two wires reversed and try to power up the unit, it will still be ok right? my unit has rev.polarity protection, just won't turn on - correct?

HUGE THANKS iBoats!

Re: quick connect for fish finder

You could very well FRY that machine if you reverse polarity.

I'd get some marine butt connectors with heat shrink and adhesive lined to make my connections.

You can find quick disconnects at most any marine store. Pretty simple, actually. I do not solder my marine wiring as the bouncing of the boat can break the wire where the solder ends. I rely on very good crimps instead (and the adhesive lined heat shrink butt connectors).

crimped butts, solder, same deal in this case - as that isn't the issue at hand.
(not sure how it would fry the machine when it has Rev.Polarity protection on it?? Anyone care to elaborate?)

Still lookin for an answer on if this ok to cut the 2pin side off and hardwire to fishfinders Red and Black wires

As far as I can tell, what you're trying to do should work just fine. The ring terminals on that dingus are 5/16", so should fit the screw-posts on a typical marine battery. 3A should protect the wiring (if we trust Deltran's engineers :p), maybe too much for the FF--it probably draws less than 1.5 amps, does it have built-in overcurrent protection? If so, 3A fuse fine, if not, I'd go to a 1.5A or 2A fuse.

As to reverse polarity, I'd imagine it will protect you from boo-boos; if you've got a meter, you could determine for sure which lead off the battery was which, I would assume your FF manual will help you determine which FF lead is positive vs negative.

EDIT: I can tell you right now, on the ring terminal'd harness, at the plug end, the positive will be the one covered in plastic, the bare one will be negative.

Such a low-amp, non-critical application, I'm thinking solder should be fine; just make sure to twist the wire ends together (to give strength against pulling apart), flux before soldering, and cover with adhesive heat shrink (for moisture protection and added pull-apart resistance).

Re: quick connect for fish finder

the FF says to use 3A, and it came with its own 3A inline (to be wired up itself). First paragraph of yours taken care of.

FF lead red = positive, FF lead black = negative. (as always these colours).
It's the wires on the EXTENSION CABLE side where the SAE pin is, I am wondering. Both sides are black wire.
As far as I know, either side of the pin can be +/- depending which side of the connection it's on, see this:
http://batterytender.com/includes/languages/english/resources/Installation_BT_Plus.pdf
(second of four paragraphs taken care of)

3rd paragraph, you're correct. See PDF above.
I just have to make sure I get the +/- of the EXTENSION CABLE correct after I cut the 2pin off, it appears bare end turns "+" here??

EDIT: IF a mod wants to move this to ELECTRONICS section please do so, just noticed it

Any electronics part store, and even most automotive suppliers have male/female match pairs of connectors which are designed to prevent polarity reversal and also protects the hot leads when disconnected.
