Rather than us taking the time to outline starting procedure -- why don't you tell us what your cold and hot start procedure is.

I push the hot foot down 3/4 of the way and push in the choke and start cranking on it and let up after a few cranks but I have found that I have to choke this motor intill it fires then it will fire up "smoke a lot" and shut back down and them I repeat am I doing something wrong

Unless you have a weak fuel primer bulb, you have a fuel restriction. Also, you're giving it too much throttle (3/4?) for the starting procedure.... 1/8 to 1/4 throttle is plenty.

(Fuel Anti Siphon Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Many of the later OMC V/6 engines incorporate a fuel restriction warning via a vacuum device attached to the powerhead. If the engine overheats, or if you have a fuel restriction, the warning is the same.... a steady constant beep.

NOTE... Only the V/6 & V/8 engines have the above "Fuel Restriction Warning". The warning horn will not sound on the other models.

The fact that a engine is not overheating, but the warning horn sounds off with a constant steady beep, and that the rpms drop drastically would indicate that the engine is starving for fuel due to a fuel restriction. Check the built in fuel tank where the rubber fuel line attaches to the tank fitting. That fitting is in all probability a "Anti Siphon" valve which is notorious for sticking in a semi closed position. It will be aluminum, about 2" long, and the insides of it will consist of a spring, a ball, and a ball seat. If this valve exists, remove it, knock out those inner components which will convert it to a straight through fitting, then re-install it. Hopefully that cures the problem.

The above procedure will cure a restriction problem with the anti siphon valve as stated. BUT, it may also allow fuel to drain backwards to the fuel tank when the engine is not running (siphoning backwards) due to the fact that the carburetors/fuel pump etc are higher than the fuel tank. This condition is not an absolute as the valves in the fuel primer bulb usually prevent this backwards siphoning problem. However.... if this does take place, the cure would be to install a new anti siphon valve.

Coal Duster..... No offense intended but you'll need to break that long sentence up into separate sentences. I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean.

I know Joe sorry it took me a half hour to post it LOL I don't type what I'm thinking sometimes so here we go.

I replaced all my fuel hoses and vent hose I put a new prime bulb on it also.
When I pump the bulb it collapse do you think I got a bad prime bulb or do you think it's in the tank thanks again

Re: 1997 Johnson 200HP Hard to start

If the arrow on the fuel primer bulb is facing towards the engine, it is installed correctly. If when you compress the bulb, it does not spring back to its normal shape but rather stays flat...... a restriction exists between the bulb and the fuel supply.

To test the bulb, disconnect it from the tank, then compress it. If it springs back to its normal shape now, the bulb is okay and the problem is with the tank.

Let us know what you find.
