1980 Cobalt Condesa 22 foot. My question is how far off the back of the bunks is safe for the boat to be off the bunks? My boat sits about 6 inches off the bunks at the transom is this too much?

I read that the max from transon is 12". I'm not sure if this is different from bunks to rollers. I'd think 6" would be fine. Especially with bunks since they support more of the boat than rollers.

I think you need bunks under the transom, Chris.

Move your boat forward those 6 inches, then move the axle cradle as required to correctly load the tongue/hitch with 7-10% of the trailer/boat weight.

We could really use a couple of pics. Ideally, you want the transom directly above the bunk support, reguardless of where the end of the bunk is.

My boat hangs only an inch off the back of the bunks to the transom and only about a half inch off the bottom roller to the transom.

Six inches for a sterndrive (but not an outboard) is probably Ok, but if it were mine I'd move the bow stop maybe three inches forward. But first I'd check to see that the tongue weight would still be OK. Half ton trucks are mostly limited to 500lbs, not sure about 3/4's, maybe 600 dead weight.

The other thing you could do if it's on a trailer is to set the skeg on a support of some kind--just enough to take some of the bending load off the transom.

I like to have the bunks support the transom.

my trans sits about 1 in on the bunks too. I think it supports the boat better

Wasn't meant as a hijack at all. Was just showing how my boat hangs a few feet off of the bunks with no apparent issues.

Sorry for the confusion.

I would definitely want to make the adjustments as indicated above.... I have about 1 inch of bunk showing under my transom too... good to support it all.

I adjusted my trailer so the bunks are under the transom, just seems like the right thing to do.

Yes. You want to support the transom. Bunks, even or slightly 1/2 to 1 inch past the transom.

Think the OP's question was a bit open ende4d in hind sight.
Didn't mention hull design.
Sailboats / houseboats / Semi V's would be different.

I assumes(!) he was speaking conventional V hull, but maybe not?

Re: minimum to hang boat off bunks on trailer

Sorry for the delay and replying to all the great feed back. We were on the river all weekend. I'll have to try and get pictures, the boat is a v hull cuddy cabin and its heavy. I cant get it to go up any further as there is a cross member at the bow that the keel wants to hit and it has allot of tongue weight now. I think I may need a bigger trailer or extend this one. I'll get some pictures up. Thanks guys.

Looks like the bunks were shortened.....rotted ends cut off... think about it ,... what part of your trailer supports the most weigth...... rebuild your bunks...

Ah, I never thought of that. It's a 2005 and in great shape I guess I never guessed someone would cut off the bunks. So if I get longer bunks since it will be further off the back of the trailer should I add two more bunks? Also my tie downs are about even with the bunks so my straps are like pushing the boat forward.
