Tilt Trim Wiring

While on the water the tilt /trim died, so no response to any controls. At the landing, noticed burnt marks on the wiring where the wire from the engine passes the mounting bracket towards the tilit motor. Killed power, cut / connected bare wire, repowered, and tilit was running again. Turns out the wires are dryrotting under the snake skin. So, is it acceptable to splice / waterproof the two wires from the tilit motor to the enigine? I can't find the wiring without buying a whole new tilit motor, and don't want to fix what isn't broke...any suggestions? Thanks!

It appears that you have no choice but to replace the wires. It would be worth a try to ask around to see if anyone has a faulty PTT motor whereas you could cut the wires at the faulty motor and transfer them to yours. There's plenty of them out there, especially at dealerships and the regular outboard repair shops.

Thanks Joe, good idea on looking around for used parts. Any suggestions for heat shrink or waterproofing the splice?

Re: Tilt Trim Wiring

In that area where submersion usually takes place, I would suggest having two different size heat shrink tubing. Installing the smaller size first (smaller in diameter and length), then installing the larger one over it (larger in diameter and length).

Make sure to have both slid up the wire somewhat befor soldering..... impossible to install heat shrink after soldering usually.

There are some products on the markets that we've used in the past to wire sump pumps under grates at loading docks, you make the plice and encapsulate it in this splice kit, if I remember right the stuff heats up and seals everything off. Might try electrical supply house.
