Shift adjuistment off after impeller replacement

[Eric 3.7LX Alpha 1]

Replaced the impeller in the lower of my 89 alpha 1. Can,t get the shift to engage reverse. Foreward is fine as well as neutral. If I disconnect the remote control shift cable from the shift plate and manually move the lower shift cable I can get everything.

Is it possible that the when reinstalling the lower and upper back together, the upper and lower shift shafts were not inline with each other in foreward when installing. The symptom is as if the manual shift lever needs alittle more travel to engage reverse.

I am thinking it might be off 1notch from being correct, but wanted to ask here before I drain the drive and separate the halves to readjust.

Yes you prob 1 spline off. And make sure the stainless washer is on the shift shaft of the lower unit.
