I am replaceing my water pump impellar and the key that is on the shaft is rusted to the shaft how should i get this out? The impellar was not in bad shape but it didnt pump water and it had a slight tear where it sits on the key. I blew out the water suction tube and water came out of my tell tale but didnt come out the exhaust port. I picked up on the drive shaft and lifted up out of place and when i turn it makes a noise that i never heard before. What should i do about these problems?
thanks

Re: impellar replacement

Spray a penetrating oil on the key and work it back and forth with a pair of vise grips. Clean up the slot and shaft with a file and some 400 wet or dry paper before putting in the new one. You can buy them at most boat suppliers.

The drive shaft will come out of the powerhead when you remove the lower gear housing. Is that what you are talking about? What do you mean by lifted it out of place?

With the foot off if i pick up on the shaft it lifts up and then will set back into the gears. Ken

Re: impellar replacement

You probably do not have the drive shaft aligned with the dog gears properly. Put the shift shaft in neutral, which is halfway between both limits and try rotating the shaft as you are pressing down on it. See if that works.

Re: impellar replacement

Ok one more question for you guys. I pulled the lower unit off and the key on the drive shaft looks like it is rusted in. The old impellar looks just like the new except for on the inside that goes on the shaft has a small piece worn out that the key cut into it. Does the key just pull out of is it screwed into the shaft and what could be the best way to get it out?
Thanks

Re: impellar replacement

The key just pulls out. Make sure you clean up the area with fine wet or dry paper before trying to install the impeller.
