Ok im workin on a 50hp 1988 evinrude. i was looking to replace the orifice on the top of the carb and i dont know which one to buy. they sell ORIFICE, Idle, No. 40 - 40 models and ORIFICE, Idle, Std., No. 36 - 50 models. i dont know the difference but if yall know that would be a big help. also the motor doesnt go into reverse. im gonna look at the cable and maybe its loose but if not can someone help me in how to get the gears out. do i just have to drop the lower unit or what? anything you guys can help with would be great. Have you removed your orifice to check the number stamped on it? Mine had very small #'s on it. I'd say the #36 for your 50hp. The #40 looks to be for 40hp. Don't understand why a 40hp model would be listed if you punched in 50hp. I tried it, and got the same result. Anybody agree, or dissagree?

No problem. Their diagrams gave me the runaround on my 82 50hp Evinrude. The diagrams had idle, and intermediate idle jets swapped. Wouldn't run the way that they showed. Just fouled out plugs. Local marina showed the same way. Good luck. Keep us posted,

Re: Evinrude 50 so many questions

Got another problem with this motor. just finished rebuilding the carb so i tried to start it on the hose and she wouldn't. the first time it would spin pretty hard and fast then all the times after it would barely spin and it was in jolts. also i noticed the bendix was stuck up, not every time but often when i let off the key the bendix stayed up at the flywheel. any ideas?? also i noticed a wire was disconnected. it was a three prong type thing near the big red part of the wire coming from the starter. (sorry about the lack of technical terms)

The 3 wire plug operates your VRO system. If it is not pluged. your VRO is not hooked up which means you will need to mix your oil in the fuel. 50 to 1 is the correct mixture.

oh ok that makes sense because the oil is mixed into the tank in a 50:1 already, thanks alloveday.

I took the starter off today to take a look and take it apart and put it back on and she still does the same thing. What i think, with my limited experience, is that there is too much compression?? maybe? because it sounds like the starter is havin a hard time at first but then will spin it fast with nothing. she doesnt even sound like its gonna turn over

Re: Evinrude 50 so many questions

Ok, haven't posted in a while, been trying to figure it out by myself but im stumped here. I have charged the battery up to over 13 volts, put it on the motor and tried to start it. it will spin the flywheel and try to start but still nothing. i dont know if any of these one things will keep it from working but i found some possible problems,

  • the metal tab on the coil is very corroded and when i pulled the bolts out something sprayed out
  • the plate that pushes the throttle control on the carb hardly touches the roller and at full throttle, engine off, barely pushes the butterfly valve open
  • the starter will spin the motor but then go down real quick and keep spinning with a whining
  • also should the red know be pushed all the way towards the boat? i know its for manual start i just dont know where it goes for electrical start.

sorry for the lengthy post im just out of ideas and need yalls help. Thanks guys

Re: Evinrude 50 so many questions

I had the Same problem with my starter turns out the terminal on my negative battery cable was the culprit as i saw a lil puff a smoke come off it one time when was trying to start. Check all your grounds for corrosion remember your starter grounds itself to the motor so removing it and brushing down the contact points wouldnt be a bad ideal also put some 3 in 1 oil on the shaft your bendix should free up a little after that.

Re: Evinrude 50 so many questions

I put some wd-40 on the shaft that the bendix sits on and now the bendix wont engage the flywheel the shaft just spins really fast. also i havent worked much on bigger motors, how come when i turn the flywheel by hand, it makes a hissing sound? maybe nothing just curious
