Let me first say that I know nothing about motors but I want to learn. I purchased a 1993 2 stroke Evinrude 4 hp, 3 years ago. It stopped running shortly after I bought it. I then took it to a marina who hosed me and charged $200 for a carb clean and "so called" scraping of junk out of the lines. Anyway, since then I have done nothing to it preseason or post season except for correct mixture of gas and oil for fuel. I ordered a manual and would like to start doing maintenance. Can any of you provide a run-down checklist of what I should do for maintenance? To get a feel for working on motors I thought I would change the carb after I get the manual. What else should I learn how to do and when should I do certain maintenacne/replacement steps? I've heard talk about changing lower unit oil and water pump switchout etc. What should I do prior to getting into a situation where I have engine problems (ie. regular maintenance)?

BottomDweller2: Send me your motor and manual and I'll send you my 71 (fully maintained) 4hp Evinrude. Of course I'm just kidding. Oddly enough the carb is something I don't work on unless the motor starts to give trouble. I would say checking your gear oil for water contamination is an annual must do. Pull the prop and check for fishing line wrapped around it a couple of times per year. The other thing that comes to mind is your impeller should be replaced (regardless of visual condition) every 3 to 5 years. I replace my plugs every couple of years depending on how much I use the motor. A little grease here and there annually as well.

For your motor I would recommend you change the fuel lines from the connector to the carb. with new lines approved for use with ethanol fuel. But that only needs to be done once.

Seems like I'm probably missing something here but others will point it out. They are great little motors and if treated right will last forever. The manual will be fundamental to your success. I hope it was the Service Manual you ordered. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: '93 Evinrude 4 hp maintenance

Thanks Rick and wilde1j.
I have not run the motor in 4 months due to making some upgrades to my jon boat but before I take it out next I will do these things/check these things with the motor. Hopefully the service manual I ordered will give an amateur some insight. Let me know if you think of anything else. Would I need to do anything with the water pump?

Also, last time I took it out the motor gave me a little trouble; it worked fine at low throttle but when I cranked it up to full throttle and ran it for 5 min. it cut off and then gave me trouble restarting. Once restarted it would cut off again after another 5 minutes. Any thoughts?

The impeller is in the water pump and should be done. The symptom you describe could be caused by a dirty carb. I would buy a new kit and install it after you thoroughly clean the body and all it's little orifices. No need to replace it as mentioned in your first post. Rick.

Where can I get a carb kit, impeller, fuel lines, OMC Gearcase lubricant, and other OMC grease for my 1993 4 hp Evinrude? (E4RETB)

Iboats

You will be able to look up the parts you need and find useful diagrams at http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=bf6ad09c53cead335fcfd8a6471c0f7f

Strongly recommend you also obtain a copy of the owners manual which details the basic servicing etc.

Water pump overhaul will be quite straightforward but a workshop manual is to be recommended.

Any high viscosity (SAE80W90 EP) outboard gear oil would be suitable. eg Evinrude Hi Vis but you'll find Quicksilver oils readily available. It is advisable to use an outboard gear oil as these contain emulsifiers and inhibitors to guard against the effects of water ingress which automotive oils do not.

Re: '93 Evinrude 4 hp maintenance

Hey guys, just double checking on something....My manual states that I should only use OMC Triple Guard Grease and OMC Hi-Vis Gearcase Lube on my '93 Evinrude 4 hp. Do I have to use these or is it just as good to use something else that is readily available and if so, is that quicksilver?....I am new to this and don't want to screw anything up but the OMC Triple Guard and Hi-Vis stuff mentioned above is very hard to find (at least on the internet) and the site I did find it on was pretty expensive and it required me to have a min. shopping cart amount of 39.00. I don't want to have to spend this much on this stuff if I don't have to. Thanks for your help.

All BRP dealers will have both Hi-Vis and Triple Guard grease in stock ... neither is particularly expensive.. Very easy to find, unless there are zero BRP Evinrude dealers near you.

Cajuncook,
Thanks for the reply. I haven't dug into my dad's old motor yet. I figured I would attempt to service my little 4 hp first. It needs some maintenance and I figured this would be a good place to get a feel for outboards.

wilde1j,
I live close to a pretty big lake that has alot of big boat dealers around. I am assuming one of these guys would have these things..right?,,,Would any other automotive store, or chain store carry this that you know of?

Any Evinrude dealer, not just a marina or boat dealer. Haven't seen either product in other stores like Walmart, etc. BTW, Triple Guard is one of the very best marine greases , anywhere.

Re: '93 Evinrude 4 hp maintenance

Ok guys,
Looking for a little guidance. First of all let me reemphasize that this is the first time I have attempted to work on a motor. The motor already runs pretty good for the most part. I just want to do a little maintenance to preserve the motor and also to learn alittle. Anyway, I received the manual in the mail. I am a little overwhelmed. I finally found the part in the manual that speaks to impeller replacement. It falls under gearcase servicing. I?ve actually attached the schematics of the motor and the manual excerpt that talks about gearcase servicing. Anyway it takes me through so many steps of servicing the gearcase.

1. Does impeller replacement usually require all of these steps and requirements (see attached). It has me going through so many steps of dissembling the gearcase, driveshaft, and lower unit components, and discarding multiple things in the lower unit that does not seem to be directly tied to the impeller.

2. There are also special tools required to take this thing apart that I cannot find (ie Propeller shaft bearing remover/installer P/N 392091, Gearcase Head Seal Installer, P?N 327572, Driveshaft Bearing Remover/Installer, P/N 392092, and Driveshaft Seal Installer, P/N 327431). Where do I get these things if I truly need them. I searched the internet but no luck. Are there alternatives.

3. When replacing an impeller what do you usually replace other than the impeller (all of these other things like Plate gasket, gearcase o-ring, gearcase head seals, etc. etc.?)
Thanks to any help you can provide on the attached manual excerpt for my 1993 Evinrude 4 hp and on the questions above.

No special tools usually to do a water pump. I always do a complete pump kit. I looking at some of the illustrations, your motor is quite different than the ones I've worked on. Perhaps someone with direct experience with your motor can be more help.
