I have a 1971 18 hp evinrude that i have installed a stop switch on. I took the two wires coming from under the armature plate and hooked them up to a standard toggle switch. When the switch is on, i get fire from bothe plugs but the engine will not start. When i turn the switch off i get fire from one plug but the engine starts and runs good. What is going on? I assume i have this wired up wrong i just need someone to tell me how it should be. Thanks.

What kind of "standard" toggle switch do you have? SPST? SPDT? DPST? DPDT? Something else?

Anyhoo, when the wires aren't connected to anything, it is turned "on". When the wires are connected together, it is turned "off". All the switch has to do is connect/disconnect the wires.
