How to tell which hubs I need

I would like to order some pre-loaded hubs. How can I tell which I need? I pretty sure I've safely narrowed it down to these:

I took one of my hubs off but I didn't readily see any numbers. I didn't thoroughly clean them either though. Anyone have any insight?

According to the specs each of those 3 hubs do have different size bearings. 1", 1 1/16", 1 3/8". Should I just measure the bearing? Do I measure from the inside or outside?

It depends on your axle. What size is your axle spindle?

Take a look at this chart. It may help you a lot.

You also need to know what size grease seal you need since the area that the grease seal rides may be different than what the inner bearing rides on.

Buy some cheap calipers, if you don't have them already, to measure things.

Ha! I'm proof that no one reads stickies. That's very helpful. I'm going to pick up a cheap caliper tonight and measure my spindle.

One thing that you may have to watch out for is the diameter of the inner seal.
ex. The inner seal may be a different diameter. I see that kits you are looking at come with extra larger seal so you will have to measure the diameter of the step. I don't think you have to go buy calipers. If you have a decent scale not a kids plastic ruler.:p You should be able to measure the inside diameter of the old bearings.

Re: How to tell which hubs I need

I got some numbers but they don't seem to be helping me.

Inner bearing L68149 (this seems standard)
Outer Bearing LM12749 (this seems weird)
Seal 367599 (this is apparently useless)

Inner diameter of inner bearing 1 3/8"
Inner diameter of outer bearing 7/8"
Out diameter of seal 2 5/16"

Help???? These numbers don't seem to be helping me select the proper pre-loaded hubs to buy.

It's a 5 lug 4 1/2" hub

That's a small diameter axle you have there!

I edited my post above. I said "seal" a bunch of times when I meant "bearing".

My 'guess' is 3500# axle with L44649 outer bearings and T515191VB Seal.
But as I said, just a guess, that's what my Eagle Trailer turned out to be, trailer has a gross weight of 3000 lbs. ST205/75/14 in tires on a 5 bolt 4.5 inch center hub.

How did you come up with that number? Ezmobee said nothing about that number?

I would suggest calling up Champion Trailer to see what they can suggest. Seems like a small axle to me.

Re: How to tell which hubs I need

Based on the spindle diameters (it is a stepped splindle) and the inner bearing number my bet is it's one of these two. Problem is the seal. I don't know what that measurement is. It surely isn't the outer diameter.

1455GR 1 3/8" X 1 1/16" 68149 / 44649 5 LUG ON 4.5" 1.71" DOUBLE LIP 12# $45.95

1465SPG 1 3/8" X 1 1/16" 68149 / 44649 5 LUG ON 4.5" 1.68" DOUBLE LIP 12# $46.95

Ok I think I know why I'm having trouble. I have weird spindles. I think I read something about these on one of the trailer sites. It's a stepped spindle with a groove in it I suppose to allow easier greasing. Am I right? That would explain my small diameter outer bearing.

EZ,

Is there a reason you need the loaded hubs rather then just rebuilding the ones you have? I sure can see why they need service, but are the hubs damaged or something? Sorry for the questions so late in your post, but if it were me and the hubs did not need replacing , I would just have some new outer races pressed into the hubs, put in the new bearings and seals and call it a day.

Well I am incompetent mechanically and nothing good can come of me doing anything myself other than slapping some new hubs on. In lieu of this weird spindle situation I think I will just be taking my axle off (it needs to be repositioned anyway) and taking it to an RV shop and have them do it. At least, like you said, I won't be throwing unnecessary parts at it that way.

Well, at least you know your limitations, rather than buggering something up. I find hubs are pretty easy - you are not too far off from being done. You just need to find the right parts-
I find Motion Industries to be great for parts like you need, and they may be able to press out/ in the races.http://www.motionindustries.com/motion3/jsp/mii/LocationsMI.jsp Link for you just in case you want to go down that road, instead of the RV shop.

Ya, the sticky is nice, but it doesn't have all of the sizes listed. Mine are 1.25" and 1.75".

Check with someplace like Columbia Motor Parts. They can prob. get the new bearing sets and press the races in for you. I don't know what real auto parts stores are in York county.
From the way the pictures look, the outside bearing is riding on the first step of the axle. The rear bearing is on the second step which looks about 3 or 4 inches long. The seal is riding on the last step that appears to be about 1/2 inch long. What is the diameter of that last 1/2 inch? Are there any other markings on the seal other than those numbers. Does it have CR on in. Chicago Rawhide. That can be looked up at a lot of places. Kaman Bearing, Bearings Inc., Brown Transmission places like that.
Just clean everything up and take it there to match it up. Rebuild the old ones. Less hassle.
