I have a 2007 15 hp mercury 4 stroke that was purchased new on a 14' aluminum boat that refuses to get on plane since day one. Originally it had an electrical miss at high rpm's when under a load but not in netural. The first dealer after consulting with Mercury was unable to resolve either issue. The second dealer now claims to have solved the issue with the missing. After consulting with Mercury they suggested changing the 9 x 9 prop to something else. This just seems odd that a motor brand new out of the box wont push this litte boat and that I should have to sacrifice performance in order to get on plane.

14 feet for a 15hp is NOT a small boat. I would also suggest you drop a prop size or two. I have a 13 foot ali boat with a 15hp and it struggled with the factory prop... and you won't be sacrificing any performance, you'll probably get better performance and will be saving your engine to boot...

You think? A jon boat at 150 lbs with me at 165 lbs. a life jacket and 2 gallons of gas in a plastic tank. The boat is rated for up to 15hp. What would happen if it had a even smaller motor?

That motor on that boat with you in it should plane no problem.

This is my boat. 13' weighs in at 96kg, I'm 100kg, one tank of fuel. The hull is rated to 30hp... The 15 is working hard, but with the smaller prop it handles it ok...
