I've got a 1988 85 HP. Can anyone recommend a good in line fuel filter, preferably one that is see through. Also where is the best place to install it? Assume between the fuel pump and carbs?
Thanks all!

Re: Inline Fuel Filter

Get a water seperating filter.Racor makes a good one with a see-thru bowl.It cost about 60-90$ but well worth it.I put one on my boat and contacted the company and they sent me 2 new seal kits N/C.The Ethanol makes the rubber expand and won't re-seal unless you let it dry out for a couple of days.J.

Yea, I hear that. I put a water separating filter on last season. I want to add another inline to keep the carbs clean.

Re: Inline Fuel Filter

I had a mechanic tell me once not to use a in-line filter because it seperates the 2-stroke oil from the gas and it could cause some problems. Do you all think that is correct? I never had any issue with it on but he seemed to think that I did not need it. With so many people using an in-line filter I may switch back.

The mechanic doesn't know what he is talking about. It's cheap insurance to prevent debris from the fuel pump entering the carbs.

The Racor should be all that you need,But if you want to put in more restrictions Wally World sells a cheap filter element.J

put the filter before the fuel pump...no sense in letting any crud into the pump!

Exactly right! A clear glass inline filter from napa or any parts store will work. I cradled mine in a cut piece of pvc pipe to cushion the glass. Cut to expose the filter so I could see the flow.

6 bucks! Purolator F50153 between the pump and carbs. If the brass valves start to shed chips or the diaphragm starts to disintegrate, the screen will catch it BEFORE it gets to the carbs.

Get a new mechanic! Or at least one who understands basic 2 cycle operation and lubrication. Oil and Gasoline is a mixture that is infinitely soluable in each other. No matter what the ratio, a filter will never separate them. They must be distilled apart. When the carb vaporizes gasoline, that is a low temperature distillation.
