Why does the lower unit oil have to be put in from the bottom hole instead of the top one on the lower unit? :( 1985 Evinrude. Bassmeister

Re: Lower unit oil

If you put it in from the top air would get trapped in the lower unit not allowing it to get full of oil. You would ruin the gears in short order due to lack of lubricant.

By filling from the bottom, the air goes out the top (aka "vent") hole allowing you to get the lower unit full.

You could put it in from the top if you wanted to take all day dribbling it in a drop at a time. Try putting it in faster and it just burps back out at you.

Re: Lower unit oil

Thank you FR. I noticed that it did just that..burp & spit. It's just a pain, with that palstic bottle I get from Walmart,to fill from bottom. Its like I squeeze and squeeze before anything gets up there. I can go 2 trips, before I have to put more in. Before you ask,I cant, at this time, afford $300 to,I think the mechanic said, get seals/gaskets for water pump.

Thank you so much for the info FR
It has been helpful thus far
This Forum is way above par.
Round for everyone at the bar.;) Cheers. BassMeister

Re: Lower unit oil

You can get a hand pump that screws onto the bottle top for about $5-$10. Hose from the pump has a fitting that screws into the lower unit fill hole. Virtually no mess except for the bit that comes out between unscrewing the hose and getting the plug back in. (make sure you put the vent plug back in first as the vaccum helps the oil stay in the lower until while you fiddle with getting the drain plug back in).

Can appreciate your frustration at using those "squeezable" bottles for filling the lower unit. What a PITA those are/were.

I get the pumps at a place called "Princess Auto" here in Canada. Don't believe they are in the States, but I'm sure NAPA or some other similar store must sell them.
