What did your impeller look like when you replaced it? Did you replace the entire pump in the out drive or just the impeller? Could be thermostat also or the hose from stern drive to engine could be an issue.

What kind of lake? What kind of bottom? What were you doing when 'all of a sudden' happened? Were you running through mud, off an island, pulling two fat guys on an old innertube, cruising at 45 MPH and 4500 rpms? What immediately preceded the overheat and what did you do in the time prior?

1996...thats a gen II most likely, when you changed the water tube from the SS housing to the upper unit, are you sure it sat correctly and were the o-rings in good shape?

If not, the water pump will pump the water into the unit but wont pump it up into the engine...(actually, some water will make it into the engine, but def not enough to keep it cool...dont ask me how I know).

An easy way to tell, is run it on muffs...if tons of water just pours out of the exaust through the propeller, thats the problem...(granted, if my instance is the problem, you wouldnt have been able to drive long, and if you let it run too long you may have other things to look into).

Disregard what I mentioned earlier...I didnt catch this until the re-read of the original post, so now I just had a couple of questions.

Ok, I reread everything, and from what I gather, you must have a closed cooling system?

I also must have missed in the original thread that you had done all of this work because of an existing overheating problem?
