I have a 1957 evinrude 7.5 fleetwin that i just replaced the impeller on and cranked it up for the first time today... I think the gas oil mix isnt right because it was smoking a lot... not just a little smoke but a whole lot of it when i started raising the speed it was so much smoke i couldent see!! is this normal if not what would be causing it?

Re: Smoking evinrude

They smoke a lot because of the rich oil/fuel ratio.....

Lots of smoke is a good thing with these older 2 strokes.... as long as they smoke good you don't have to worry about internal premature wear of reciprocating componants.

This is why these motors last so long when cared for........

It is part of their charm.......

Re: Smoking evinrude

Get that thing on a boat, out on the lake, and I think you will find that the smoke is a whole lot less objectionable because it is spread out over a long wake. In a barrel, it just boils up around your head and freaks you out. Besides, on a boat you can adjust it properly, something that is impossible to do in a barrel.

If you want less smoke, use 100% Synthetic TC-W3 outboard oil (Pennzoil by the gallon at Wal Mart). It also causes less oil slick on the water, and is bio-degradeable and low toxicity to plant life. It's all I use anymore.
