I'm having a water leak on my '98 Bayliner Capri 1950 where the steering cable comes through the hull, the accordian rubber boot is dry rotted and cracked. Where is it easiest place to disconnect the cable so I can place a new rubber boot on the cable? Do I have to take the outdrive apart, im not too familiar with it....lol.

Also where can i buy the new part? I have looked up and down on the internet and can't find it.

Thank you!

I am not an expert on how to do this but this forum has a store and I bet you could get it from there.

My bet is the bellows need to be replaced. You can do this yourself if you're handy. (get Service Manual for Alpha I gen II drive and 3.0 L) If not then I would have a Mercruiser certified mechanic inspect, and replace if necessary.

Peace!

This 'blows' my mind...and at my age that is almost impossible to do!

I am a Bayliner owner...that totally loves his boat...and has no issues at the moment.

I did, however, have the temp gauge fail on my 2005 175BR recently...and I didn't get any real help from Bayliner, even though all that I was looking for was the correct information for me to order the exact replacement. If this 'new' member is with Bayliner, and can solve minor issues, then I am totally 'stoked'!

Sweet...and free 'bump'!

Happy boating!

Re: Water leak - 1998 Bayliner Capri **PLEASE HELP**

The boot is available in two basic designs: OE style, and split style. The OE style boot requires the disconnect of the steering cable to thread the cable through the boot (and sometimes a wire loom too) to install. The split boot is easier to deal with because as it sounds, it is split down the side, so it can be opened and wrapped around the cables. It is usually held closed by adhesive or small nuts/bolts.

I need to replace my boot, and knowing that the outboard motor needs to be moved/removed to get the steering cable out, I will be using the split design.

If you can remove the steering cable easily from the I/O I would do that, but either boot will work well.

Do a search on "motor well boot" to find all available styles and sizes.

Thank you, that is what im looking for! I found the OE style easily but no luck finding that split style and I would prefer that much more so I would not have to disconnect and run the cable through. Do you know who manfactures them or what website sells them? Thanks!!!

I may be wrong here ..... But :)
I think the OP may be referring to his shift cable boot. Is your capri an outboard? Can you post a picture of the boot in question?

It's an I/O, I'm not at home and the boat is still in storage. I'm not sure if its the shift or steering cable that passes through the boot. I will take a pic tonight or tomorrow.

Sounds like the shift cable. IIRC you probably have the Alpha one sterndrive. Also if the shift bellows is breaking down (splitting, dry rot) your drive shaft and exhaust bellows are not far behind. You can get parts, manual and tools a bit cheaper than the dealers on line.

P.S. Can I reference a site that I use? I reviewed the rules and this seems like a gray area to me.

Ok upon further searching it is the shifter cable bellow that is torn. What is the easiest way to replace the bellow, guessing I have to take off the outdrive and disconnect the cable?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

YUP, drive off.

Get the manual in the adults only section, and as mentioned, the shift cable boot is just one of a set that should be replaced together.

...along with checking, gimble bearing, ujoints and engine alignment. Hows your waterpump?
