2001 Maxum 1800...Whats this for?

Hello...
New to boating and recently purchased a 2001 Maxum 1800 SR.
I have attached a pix of the engine cover. Whats the hole for on the front? Whats its purpose. Looks like it had a cap of some sort.

Thanks to all the people that post. I have spent hours learning about boating on this site.

It looks like the remains of a scupper valve, only it is missing the flapper/cover on the outside of it. I'm not sure why someone would install one on the engine cover though.

I have seen a couple of things looking like that and most were for fire suppression so you could stick the end of a fire estinguisher in there without allowing the fire to gain more oxygen, aka lifting the hatch up. But I could be worng.

Nothing on the other side.....Doesn't look like a hose was connected.

Can't tell from the pictures, does it have little flaps in it like the straw hole on a drink lid? If it does, or used to, it is exactly as mentioned above. A port to insert a fire extinguisher nozzle.

Or it could be a hole

75TowerofPower is 100% correct. It is a port to use an extinguisher without opening the motor cover.
