I just got my new rectifier in the mail and below is a picture of it. because my old rectifier looks nothing like this and the new one doesn't come with any instructions, I have no clue how the four wires go. if you look closely one of the tabs is turned sideways, im thinking maybe that is the ground? help!

You should see some markings by each terminal. One terminal should have a + symbol. This is your DC output or hot lead usually the red wire going to the wiring harness. Another terminal across from the + should have a - symbol. This is ground, which goes to the engine block. The other two terminals should have ~ symbols, or marked AC. These are the AC input to the rectifier from the stator. Depending on what year your motor is, these two wires are either green or on later model engines, they are yellow.

To recap, red wire goes to terminal marked +.
Ground wire goes to terminal marked _.
Stator wires go to terminals marked ~, or AC. If you have a tach, the tach wire is hooked to one of the stator terminals. If the tach acts funny, try hooking it to the other stator wire.

hmm ...

mind if I try?

Square bridge rectifiers are a universal standard. They are all wired exactly the same no matter who makes it.

One corner will bear a " + " marking. This is the only required marking. The other three terminals are defined by the position of " + ". Usually, " + " corner will be beveled. In packages with metal housings there may not be a beveled corner.

The " + " terminal is DC output and connects to red wire. Red is universal color code for DC positive.

Directly opposite in a caddy-corner fashion is the DC negative output. it connects to the black wire. Black is the universal color code for ground.

The other two corners are your AC input. There is not a universal color code for alternator and stator windings. Purple and yellow are common.

Rrhitt has it correct. I'm a licensed electrican...and the color code he is stateing is correct. Although the other is not completely wrong either.

I just installed a rectifier like that one the other day. It didn't have any markings but it did come with a diagram.

Here are some pictures that may help. (sorry for the poor quality photos)

The first is a diagram that describes which blade is which.

#2 and #3 are the new rectifier installed.

#4 is the original rectifier/regulator
