No reverse, OR no forward! Help!

Ok I've lost reverse. When I move the throttle back it just clicks real fast but never engages.

If I go back to the engine, I found a cable that has a little rubber thing that is held in the linkage with a cotter pin.

If I pull that rubber thing out, it can be adjusted by spinning it around on the cable. By adjusting it this way I can get my reverse back, BUT once I adjust it to get reverse engaged, I don't have forward any more.

There is no happy medium, its one or the other.

Also sometimes when I go forward, the boat will engage and start moving, and after about 10 seconds traveling, I will hear a big thud, and the boat "kicks". To me it seems like its engaging enough to turn the prop, but not fully and then after a few seconds of forward, it kicks itself in.

These problems all seem to be related because they all started to happen at the same time.

Suggestions?

Thanks guys!

that adjustment is not to difficult if you have good cables first disconnect batteries/ battery for safety!! remove cotter pin and cable while the engine is in neutral and NOT RUNNING of coursr lol. now have a partner spin the prop while you very slowly shift into forward by hand on the shift cnverter where you pulled the cotter pin when he says the prop is engaged mark the shift converter now do the same for reverse and mark reverse where it engages and he cant spin the prop now adjust the cable in the middle of these two points thats it your done!! good luck and have a safe and happy boating season pss.. you mentioned it slamming into gear while traveling if this procedure fails to fix the problem you might have damaged the clutch dog in the lower

Thank you for the excellent instructions on setting your cable, I will check that!

As far as the clutch dog, it doesn't really slam into gear, it goes in gear then slams after a few minutes, could this be the same thing ?

that could indicate the outdrive is not fully down and then under load going all the way down make sure on trailer the outdrive holds position

Re: No reverse, OR no forward! Help!

More than likely your lower shift cable has failed. Trim the drive up and look at the starboard side of the drive and look at the condition of the shift cable housing as it enters the drive. That is where they usually fail. For a cable to get that out of adjustment so quickly is always a failed cable. Hopefully, you haven't killed your clutch dogs by letting it slip out of gear like it did.

there is also a reverse travel adjustment.

DL the manual and look closely at adjusting the shift.

MAN! I hope its an adjustment... I just put the stern back on! I don't want to have to take it back off for a cable.

Oh well.

Re: No reverse, OR no forward! Help!

Just checked the service manual. Couldn't find anything on shift cable adjustment/inspection/troubleshooting. Looked in Chapter 2 (Engine and Drive Maintenance), and Chapter 12 (Stern Drives). I even checked the master index! Out of all the three chapters, the only thing I found was grease points for the cable, and how to remove and install the shift Mechanism (inside the stern). So that brings me back to you guys =o)

Thank goodness for iboats!

Are you looking in a factory manual and not a Seloc?
