Maybe a worn clutch, and you may have just finished it off? I just replaced mine, it did not "look" that bad but I guess theres not much tolerance.

someone said to pull the drain plug to see if there is metal in there but is there anyway to do that with the boat in the water?

100 hp 2+2 with a 4-1/4 in lower and 3 dog clutch .... 250-450 to fix it. Sorry,,, I did it with a bow line that went overboard and got into the prop. It sux but it's a bad design for a motor with a turbo effect at 1800 RPM. It was already on it's way, you just finished it off.

I may have jumped to conclusions because it happened to me. Let's make sure it's the problem first. Is this a 4 cylinder 100 or a 6 cylinder inline 100.

You may have just spun the prop hub. Pull the plug wires then put it in gear and see if you can turn the prop without turning the motor over and without turning the prop shaft. Better yet, pull the prop off and take a look at the hub. If it's shreded or really loose then that's probably all it is and it's 45.00 easy fix.

If that all looks O.K. then I'm afraid your in for some lower unit work. You really won't know for sure where it broke until you pull the lower unit off. Once you do that you can begin to assess the damage and decide if you want to try to fix it yourself or just let a qualified mechanic do it. When it comes to lower units, I send them out because I don't want to buy all the tools and I don't have the experience to do it without them.
