Alarm going off

engine # p200tlrq impeller was replaced and sensor in engine oil tank was replaced and a sloid alarm goes off and engine is in limp mode. anybody have any suggestions this guy has taken boat to a shop and still has the same problem.

need a wee bit more information.
the yamaha alarm system uses the same horn and tone for ALL alarms from low battery voltage to water detect.
when does the alarm sound and what does the visual indicates on the digital tach look like.
there are NO oil sensors on that engine.
the engine tank has a 3 position reed switch the remote tank has a 1 position reed switch.
the remote tank while NOT trigger any audible alarms.

alarm was going off customer took it to a shop and they replaced the cap/float assy in the tank on the engine and the impeller the customer took the boat out again and its going into limp mode and alarm is going off. the switch works to fill the tank and the pump in the tank works. it has digital gauges but the water pressure gauge does not work its manual or analog. the boat wont get on plane so its gotten worse according to the customer. thanks for your reply if you need more info please let me know.

we need to know the conditions that trigger the alarm and which alarm is it.
that motor has low engine tank alarm,overheat alarm,low battery level alarm and if you try to crank it with the stop lanyard out that will trigger an alarm.
if the remote oil tank filter is clogged the engine tank can go low due to slow oil transfer and you get an alarm.
if the thermostats or the pressure control valve is bad that can trigger overheats at low speeds.
so we kinda gotta know what digital tach visual indicates are lit and what conditions are when the alarm triggers.

customer did not look at gauges when this was going on. im going to run the boat today in a tank and see what i can find. i will try to crank it with the lanyard out to see if alarm works. what you are saying is the sensor on the oil tank on the motor wont make the alarm come on? im not getting much info from the customer which doesnt help. thanks again and im going to try to duplicate the condition today.

alarm doees not sound when turning key on. today it had power to gauges but nothing to engine including trim. called customer oh ya thats happened before gray fuse holder has had another fuse put in by customer he replaced it even though it was not burned out. the stock replacement fuses are still there sealed in plastic and he did not use them. he bought another from a parts house and the one he replaced is just a little longer same amp but not the same inside. are these special fuses? i took the fuse out and put it back in and it now has power. the customer also installed a battery charger that charges batteries while using the boat(pro charger) its hard to get the straight story out of this guy. i pulled the lanyard out and turned the key on and no alarm came on. i still have yet to run this in the tank and dont know if this info will help in solving this problem. the only thing i know to do is put in the tank and run it. do you have any other suggestions. customers think if they dont tell the whole story or the truth it may be cheaper for them and i never have understood that. thanks again

ran in test tank took a long time to pump water then when it did it seems to be enough coming from pee hole. found water pressure line was spliced and came loose and puting water in bilge. when at an idle it reads 0 water pressure, when rpms go up it will go to 20psi and no higher. also seems like there are bubbles in clear water line coming out of the head going to pressure gauge is this normal. the alarm went off 1 time in 15 min. in tank it went into limp mode would not allow rpms nothing on digital gauges showed nothing when this happened i dropped rpms and alarm went away and it ran normal. when it took along time for it to show water the alarm did not come on. it came on after it was peeing water and running normal. any help would be great thanks again

How long is a long time?

What RPMs were you running at the different times?

Check the PRV to see if it is sticking open and thermostats to see if they are functioning properly

check that the pressure control valve is not stuck in the grommet,check the t-stats. they MUST be in and working properly of #1 gets hot due to cooling water loss around the top of the cylinder.
if its a saltwater motor let us know that too.
there ARE NO SENSORS on the alarm system.
only SWITCHS.
key on engine off if ANY alarm sounds you have an issue.
lanyard out engine cranking alarm should come on,if not you have an issue.
alarm on and no visual indicates on the tach is normally overheat.
on that old model the overheat and battery low indicates where in the digital speedometer.
any alarm condition locks the rpm reduction mode.
you CANNOT run it above an idle in a tank it will overheat.

cranking engine lanyard out alarm comes on. only let it idle in tank and would rev up for just seconds at a time. it is a fresh water bass boat but it does not read water pressure for almost a min when first started in tank. it is an intermitent problem i was suprised it did did in the tank. but the dgital gauge showed nothing when it was going off. i understand there are no sensors just switches

just ran engine in tank again with customer watching it did not have any water at pee hole for almost a min then it started coming out then the alarm came on and no indication on gauge of problem. this whole time no water pressure at gauge when alarm came on it when into limp mode when i tried to raise rpms i let it go back to idle alarm stopped. then it was making water pressure at the gauge. how much water pressure is normal on this engine at an idle. customer wants to replace pressure valve(poppet?) and both thermostats. he now tells me the impeller has been replaced 2 times in the last 30 hrs of use trying to solve the problem. what do you think? the water pressure line has been spliced in 3 spots and leaks in 2 of them so he wants that replaced also. i dont want to just change parts but i feel pretty good about changing these per what you guys have posted and i want to thank you. please feel free to give advise! customer said the problem has gotten worse and it now happens when he tries to get the boat on plane. i get a little more information from each time he is very stingey with info !

were it in my shop with a customer saying someone other than me has had their skinners on it here is the plan.
remove the weater pump. carefully inspect the pump and the rubber dam under the wearplate. and carefully inspect the pump housing for ANY sign of melt from dry running.
then I would clean the pcv pocket and replace the grommet then the t-stats.
then I would test the oil alarm system for proper operation and engine tank refill time.
then i would start the engine and test it.

how much water pressure is normal for this to make? i agree with the water pump thing it doesnt hurt to look. what is the test for the oil alarm ? thanks for your help

is there no water pressure standard for these engines? im hoping somebody knows everyone has been very helpful.

no standard other than a minimum of 11 PSI at 2000 RPM.
however that engines tell tale should just about dig a hole in concrete at idle.
oil test is simple.
turn the key on engine off.
make sure the remote tank is about 12 full or better.
remove the vynil tube water trap on the engine tank.
catch the oil in a suitable container.
when the alarm sounds reinstall the trap,observe the visual indicates and time how long it takes to refill and the pump shuts down.
should be in less than 180 seconds.
and now we have done 4 maint items in about 5 minutes.

this was fixed with your help. I replaced the thermostats and pop off or pressure valve. customer fished a tournament and had no alarm and no gaurdian and he is very happy. I did not find much when I replaced these parts. It was a fresh water bass boat and there was some blockage at the grommet for the pressure valve and the thermostats did not look great but the stuff was 18 years old. what I did find is the plastic pressure valve changed part numbers(superceeded) and looked nothing like the old one. It had button head or cap screw shape on one end. I called yamaha to find out what gave and they said it had been redesigned and this would take care of the problem. what you all helped me with made this problem a simple solution. thank you all very much! P. S. Im pretty sure the pressure valves are the same or simular for all yamaha v-6s in the 90s and 00s if anyone has a cooling issue
