Ayuh,... 1st ya gotta build the Mold, then build the Hull...
Actually 2 molds, 1 for the hull,+ 1 for the cap...

It's shouldn't cost much more than 2 or 3 Times the price of the 1 you posted...

Not from fiberglass...but you could put together a small one or two person pontoon rig for a lot less than the fiberglass, pre-fab rig in the link.

Re: small fishing boat project?

Years ago, I read an article in the back of a fishing magazine about how to build a canoe. It was a synopsis taken from a book titled something like "Building the 24 Hour Canoe" It showed you step-by-step how to build a canoe using 2 sheets of 4 x 8 plywood. The point that I am getting at is I think that you could fabricate a small wooden boat, encapsulated in epoxy that would serve the same purpose as the one shown. Now granted, you would not be sitting on top of it like the purchased one, but you would still get out on the water and catch fish. However, you can probably find a small alluminum jon boat cheaper.

I built a two man pontoon boat for my son and me several years ago. Made it from 3/8 exterior ply, fiberglass cloth and resin. used 5/8 exterior ply for the top and covered it with turf. Put a 42lb thrust trolling motor on it. Two swivel seats and we were fishing. Total cost for construction was less than $300.00 No plans, just winged it. Length was 10ft by 4 ft. Pontoons were 18x18 inches. Filled em with plastic coke bottles with sealed caps. Sold it after 10 yrs of service for $100.00 minus the trolling motor. My son still talks about the construction and the fun we had on that little "toon" Took about two weekends to build it.

All joking aside, the boat that guy built DID get him on the water. My hat's off to him. It would not take too many modifications or money to make a larger, safer model. 3 sheets of 2" thick pink foam, 4 2x4s and a 3/8" thick 4x8' sheet of ply and some Liquid Nails and you've got yourself a pond scamp.:D

Re: small fishing boat project?

can a guy efficiently build one of these from fiberglass?

I think it could handle a 7.5-10 HP motor and a trolling motor up front. an automatic bilge pump would be required I think.

Not efficiently, nor inexpensively. Lots of those little pond-hoppers for sale out there used. BTW, you'll never build one that will take a 7.5-10 hp outboard. Notice that the one you're looking at is only rated for 2 hp.

Still, if you want to build a boat, Google Boat Plans. There are tons of nice little boats you can build easily out there that will outperform this thing.

For example: Here's a small pontoon boat plan, and it's free:

Positioning of the seats and sat-nav computer are up the builder.
