I have a 2004 DF140 with 420 hours. Always used Mobile 1 oil. Engine never used any oil. The other day the oil light came on. I had to add 4 quarts to bring it back to full. Went for a ride other day and it used 1/2 quart in 5 miles. No smoke from engine and no visible oil leaks or oil on the water. The only thing I can think is that the oil is getting into the cooling water jacket and being dispersed out the hub with the cooling water. Also, I don't see any oil slick at idle so possibly this is only occurring at higher rpm when the oil pressure is elevated. Have an appointment with repair shop in a few days. If it's anything interesting, I will post it here.

the first reply is where you should start, there is an O ring that gets corrosion and starts to leak, do the easy stuff first before you start sueing anybody

Re: Suzuki DF140 losing oil

My 2004 Johnson 140 (Suzuki) was showing a light oil/gas slick when idling for the past 2 years, oil level was not dropping. Idle was not as smooth as when new, motor has 45 hrs, so I had injectors cleaned. Oil slick problem was worse this spring and then the low oil warning came on with the oil level low. Based on this post and identical problems with Johnson posts I had dealer check oil cooler. They removed cooler, pressurized it with compressed air, and placed it in a water bucket. It was leaking, new oil cooler was installed and so far no more problems with oil loss or oil slick. I had noticed a light film inside prop before, and would see a slick appear around the water pump discharge previously. Sounds like Suzuki has a design problem with the cooler on an otherwise good motor.

Re: Suzuki DF140 losing oil

I have a 2005 DF-140 Last spring when I took it in for winterization, my dealer told me that I had no oil in the engine, when he went to drain the oil to see how much was in the engine he pulled the oil filter and clear water came out. at that time he pickled the motor with deisel fuel a few times and filled it with fresh oil and a new oil filter. ran the motor for about 45 minutes and when he shut it down and checked the oil it was fine.
This spring when I got it out I ran it for about 3 to 4 hours and while I was out I got the low oil alarm, I had no choice but to run the motor for about 10 minutes until I could flag someone down to tow me, after taking it to another shop it was discovered that the Cylinder head gasket and the Power head gasket were both blown, and due to me running the motor for about 10 minutes I also destroid the bearings.
After reading all these problems people are having with Suzuki outboards I decided to buy a new Honda. SUZUKI CAN KISS MY YOU KNOW WHAT.
