New to the forum, lots of good info, looks like there are a lot of knowledgeable active members on here.

Just picked this 14' Lund with what I think is a 1954 15hp, Been doing alot of reading, looks like I got a full list of tune up/fixes to do. It runs, but pops and spits every now and then especially at low rpm. The last time I took it out, it only ran well when choked, almost no power without choke even at WOT. I suspect it is starved for fuel. This unit is also setup for dual lines from the tank, I'm considering upgrading to a single line. Carb cleaning? cracked fuel/vacuum lines.

Looking for verification on year and model of this unit, and advice on what to attack first given the listed symptoms.

Those are great motors. A huge improvement from the earlier 14hp models. That model was produced from 1953 - 1956. I have a 57 18hp, which is the next gen Fastwin. If you have a good working dual line tank, then there's no sense in changing it over to a single line. I think you will do it some justice, by replacing the fuel and air lines, plus rebuild the carburetor. It sounds like you may have some shelac build up in the carb and that's why you have to use the choke to run it. You could set the low speed needle at 1 1/2 turns out (from lightly seated) and the high speed at 3/4 of a turn out and see if things improve. If not, I would suggest a carb rebuild. Buy an OEM kit, so you get a new plastic float and the parts are closer to the manufacturers specs.

I would also refurbish the ignition system too. Check it over and make sure the coils aren't cracked. If one is misfiring, then that could also be why you're having to run with the choke on sometimes.

A 15104 is a '55 Evinrude 15hp. A good engine, I was running one last year. The first thing I would do is check the compression. That's the first thing I ever do as if it's low it's pretty much a parts engine. But if it's running you're probably ok, but I still like to get a baseline. And as Zephyr said, it sounds like you need a carb rebuild as if it only runs with the choke on, it is not getting enough fuel in the normal running position. And then check your coils. They are usually cracked. If you pull off the pull starter (3 screws) then there's a little cover you can open up to see the points and coils (by rotating the flywheel). If there's any cracks in em at all, replace em. Trust us, it's not worth keeping them if there's any cracks as they will only give you problems down the road. Coils are ~$20 each or so.

I also have the pdf parts manual for a 15014, if you PM me your email address and request I'll send it to you.

I have a '54. Good old motor. I just had to replace the coils this winter, made a world of difference. As already said, if the coil insulation is cracked it's time for new ones. If the carb cleaning doesn't help, mix some dish soap and water in a squirt bottle and check the air hose from motor to tank while motor is running to see if there is a large air leak.

Re: 54' Evinrude 15?

Hey guys, I have one of these outboards and my lower unit cover at the very bottom has a hole in the side of it. I've tried patching the hole and it seems to keep leaking. Where can I get one of these or what can I do to fix the hole?
