This may get a little long winded so I apologize in advance.

My garage measure 24'6" long and measure 13' to peak so a surface area of lets say 25'x26'=650 sq ft, they say add 10% for scrap and what nots so add 65 sq ft..For a total of 715 Sq Ft of roof. That would be 7.15 square of roof...How many bundles would I need? I figured around 21 or 22 bundles? but maybe a roofer in the know can double check my math or maybe I missed something.

Im guessing 5 years ago, I had a roofer come in and re roof my house with a 30 yr decorative multi panel shingles and had approx 12 bundles left over and the roofer left them here at my asking with the intentions of roofing the garage myself although it didnt need it at the time, but wanted the garage and house to match... So those 12 bundles have been sitting outside for at least 5 seasons, rain, snow, sleet, sun...you name it.. they have sat so long the paper wrapping his disintegrated. Well after finding out im a procrastinator to the max and 2 back surgeries later, Ive discovered the roof needs to be done, shingles are ok, but I have at least a 8x8 section with wood rot from the gutters backing up(im guessing) that has to be fixed, so now is the time, my hand is forced to get my matching roof..

These shingles seem a little stiff but it is only in the 50,s today... are these still good shingles or should I give them away and buy 21 or 22 bundles(providing my math is correct) and get all new? Im laid off right now, so $$$ is somewhat of an issue, but if the consensus thinks those shingles are no good, I have to bite the bullet and get all new.
Any thoughts.

Any roofer by trade have a rough idea of what Im looking at material wise, at least 2- 4x8 sheets of osb need replaced, plus felt, ice dam, shingles, and roof vents? and im guessing drip edge also..

The link is to shingles that I am looking for or close to it, to match the house of course. At least that design, I may drop down to a lower level shingle with the same design to save $$

Thanks in advance.

Re: Roofing?

Your math is right on the money (normally 3 bundles per square).

The bundles that have been sitting should be okay as long as all the tabs have not stuck together...... I would use them as the starter course which is usually flipped upside down...... if they are trash get rid of them ;)

Don't forget the ice/water barrier

If your math is correct @ 715 sq ft, then 22 bundles will do the job. (3 bundles per sq). Don't forget the ridge cap. The left over bundles from the house will be usable but the problem is, trying to match the color. As far as priceing, this varies from area to area. You can contact any lunber yard or(Lowes, Home Depot, Menards) with a list of what you need and they will give you a quote. And yes, replace the "D" edge too. Hope this helps and good luck with your project.

Re: Roofing?

I would first break open a couple of bundles for inspection. Get a bundle from the bottom of the stack and see if the tabs are stuck together so bad you can't get them apart without tearing the shingle. If they come apart easily your next problem is to find a shingle that has the color that matchs. There can be wide variations in color from lot to lot in shingles made just a few weeks apart let alone 5 years ago. There has been a lot of changes in the last few years with mergers, etc. along shingle manufactuers. Some shingles that carry the same color name as shingles made a few years ago are not even close. If you are able to find a currently made shingle that is real close in color it is still a good idea to mix the old and new ones in a completely random pattern so the slight variations do not show.

Also if you haven't priced shingles lately don't be surprised if you are still planning on spending what you did 5 years ago. If nothing else at least you can use a bundle or so as your starter course and save a few bucks.

Re: Roofing?

If they are stuck together, you can try a hair dryer to heat (soften) them up.

It works 50% of the time. LOL

If you can't quite match the color, you can mix them up for a slightly mottled effect, but near the right color.

Re: Roofing?

I own and operate a roofing company in ohio and am a certified CertainTeed contractor. It all depends on the city ordinance where you live. I know here in Ohio you have to have Ice Guard at all eves and valleys regardless of where located (heated or not). The rack is up to the owner to decide. Of course all this depends on whether you are getting a permit or not. If not and you are not worried about ice then don't worry about it.

If you are going to use 3D shingles on the roof then you will need to buy a bundle of 3 tab shingles for the capping (3D shingles will not work).

As far as the vent goes, you need at least 2 different sytle vents a combination of either, ridge (cap), gable or soffit vents)

The color maybe a little off because the serial numbers on the bundles will not match even though they say the same color. Don't worry the weather will do a number on them, and after a year or two in the outside elements they will match up.

The shingles = 21 bundles (3 bundles per sq)
The Felt = 2 rolls (1 roll covers 400sq ft)
The Iceguard = 1 roll (3ft wide x 65ft long)
The Drip Edge = 11 pieces (10ft long each)
The Capping = 1 bundle (covers 30 linear ft)
The OSB boards = 2 4ft x 8ft sheets (covers 64 sq ft)
A box of 1-1/2" long roofing nails.
A box of staples for the felt and ice guard

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: Roofing?

Yeah I forgot to mention that if they have been outside for that long, I'd worry about the heat melting the tar strips on the back of the single to other shingles. If you start pulling them apart, watch for the tar backing to come off. If it does throw the bad ones away or they will never stick and you'll be replacing them after a good wind storm.

Water somehow got up and caused the damage to the 8X8 section of roof you have to repair. I'd use the Ice dam. Cost a bit more now, but may save you from having to do more repairs down the road.
