I have an Evinrude 48 SPL 1991 and am having issues with the throttle sticking. It only happens at high rpms and then will not respond to the throttle level. The prop will disengage when put in neutral but the motor continues to rev high and cannot be shut off unless the gas line is pulled. This motor has sat for several years and I am now trying to revive it. Any suggestions?

I am interested, I am having the same type issues with a 65 ski twin. after a certain point it recs and will not stop unless I pull the choke or hit the kill switch.

Mine will not respond to the key or the kill switch when it revs up, the only thing that will stop it is pulling the main gas line to the motor!!! You can see my problem with that on the water!!!

Ok good sorry for yelling but very dangerous to rev up on flusher.
Besure throttle cable is pulling throttle arm all the way back to idle stop screw.
If not adjust cable so it does...shift to forward gear pull handle back 1\2 way to nuetral and adjust cable so it pulls back to idle stop screw.
Also check to besure roller is not touching cam and loosen sync screws on carbs to be sure throttles are closing properly.
Remove air silencer cover and look in throttle bores to be sure throttles are closing properly.
tighten screw and recheck

I dont have an answer for your problem other than if it happens again while trouble shooting it, you should just choke the motor, instead of pulling the gas line...probably much faster stopping the motor that way...

is this a tiller or a remote control outboard??

if it is remote , have you verified that the throttle cable is in fact returning...

if you move the throttle when the motor is not running, will it sitck as well???

seems like it is just the linkage in your motor...if it is remote....something might be getting hung up...get a second person to work it while you watch the linkage

good luck

Thanks to all for the suggestions!! I have also been told to check the float in the carb to see if that is getting hung up, does that make any sense, with the issues I am having?

hung up...as stuck?

because if the float is UP go get no fuel flow!!!!

you have electrical issues mainly...your motors kill circuit isnt working!!!!

I would not even bother looking at fuel flow issues until i got the electrical kill switch solved...

then you could look into your linkages and carb problems
