5.7 Mercruiser, raw water cooled-Friday I tried to test fire the engine after changing the oil (it had VERY little water in it, so little I didn't notice it till later), it was hydrolocked, I drained the water, cleaned the plugs put oil in the cylinders and she cranked right over and ran great on muffs, shut engine down after hitting running temp for a few minutes. Checked plugs they were fine, took it out to the lake and drove it about 10 minutes. Stopped and checked the oil (It was running great!) bilge was full of Chocolate milk. Started it back up ran back to the dock at 15mph, ran great, started right up, ran normal temp, risers were cool and oil pressure was 30psi at 2500 rpm+-. What gives? where do I start. I have read all the posts I can and dont see one with water in the cylinders, running ok and chocolate milk.

So, did your boat suffer from freezing temps without being winterized? Did the boat fill with water or rain water by any chance? We had water in our 5.7 and suspect that is was submerged or flooded at some point right before we bought it.

no it didnt freeze here. it did sit in the rain for 6 months, covered by its canvas but the bilge drain was open and was never submerged,

I just realized something, while we were on the water, it didn't keep filling the pan with water, it literaly pumped the oil/water all out through the valve cover vents. there is just about 1/2 quart showing on dip stick

Well, I will bump this thread to the top and maybe someone more experianced than I will comment on the relationship or the exhaust manifolds and the posibility that they could contribute to your problem. If you don't have a cracked block and the engine was not flooded, IMO the water has to come from somewhere,,,,and that is from the water circulation pump to the exhaust manifolds!

I'm doing a compression check, changing the riser gaskets and inspecting the area when I get them off, then oil change, then run it again...

Was there oil all over the valve cover vents? I ask this because it's really not possible to do what you suggest unless the whole engine was full of water, or the drains in the heads are completely blocked.
It's far more likely that the oil filter wasn't tightened, or that the old oil filter seal was stuck the the seat and you put the new filter on right over it, or you have a bad external oil line (say to the oil cooler). I'd check those things first.

I know what your saying but after running back 5 miles, why didn't water keep filling the crankcase? I've got no idea, just looking for suggestions or similar occurences. The boat is stored under its canvas all year in my back yard, drain plug out, bow up high. Ran like a top last September.

Compression check was good, lowest was 155, highest 170. theres about 2-3 quarts of milky oil left in the pan, I'll drain it tomorrow and refill. Found both risers leaking through crappy gaskets. Risers are stainless and perfect, logs are cast iron and should clean up nice. I guess I know where the water in the cylinders came from now, still not too shure about how it got in the oil. I should have it back together tomorrow, I'll run it on muffs and see if I can duplicate the water in the oil. If not-Lake test!
