Thanks for the tip whaler. Well I got the spring wound 15 turns and then the spring made a noise and I lost the tension. Took it out and it didn't look too good. Does it look like it can be fixed by a machine shop or lawnmower shop? Or am I gonna have to shell out the $80 for a new one?

You can reuse that spring with a little patience: You need to straighten that bent wire so that it points straight downward. It's spring steel, so it is hard to work with. Then you need to push the center spring back upward. Look at the first thumbnail to see a similar piece inserted into the base.

When you rewind the spring, don't try to turn it 16-1/2 turns listed in the manual or the spring will break. That was changed many years ago to 12-1/2 turns to prevent what happened to you. I don't have the earliest SB, but the one below has the same information for the 6HP which used exactly the same starter.

Ezeke I wish I would have known that yesterday lol. So the wire on the end that catches on the spring retainer plate is supposed to be bent straight down? Also, what exactly is that in your first picture?

It may not be straight down on your particlar spring and base, but the idea is the same. the outer part of the spring is held by that extension of the spring and the inner portion is held by the piece that crosses inward. The whole fits into a base (SPRING RETAINER BUSHING part # 311259).

The picture shows a similar spring in a different base.

Re: 1965 johnson 5hp help; need manual

The spring got here Thursday and I got that installed as well as the carb cleaned and a new starter rope put on. She fired right up in the barrel, although extremely smokey. Did a boat test today and it ran great, pushed me and my girlfriend about 7 mph. Although after shutting it off, about the only way I could get it to start back up was if I took the hood off, started it and then put the hood on. When I put the hood back on with the engine running, there was a noticeable cough/stutter for a second. I'm assuming that means the low speed needle is too rich? I didn't mess with it while out today but that's what came to mind because it seemed to run better with more air. What do you guys think? Thanks, -Tucker
