I bought a 1994 Chaparral that had the engine replaced last year. I took it out for the first time yesterday. at first it ran fine.It had plenty of power and would cruise at about 47 mph at wot. After a while it started backfiring and losing power. Then it stopped backfiring but it had about half the power it did before.
It still starts right up and runs great until you put it in gear. It takes forever to plane out and it's top speed has dropped to about 35 mph.
I had my friend who is a car mechanic with me and we tried adjusting the air/fuel mixture but that didn't make any difference.
I feel like it's an ignition problem, possibly the coil. The problem is that it runs fine when not under a load so I won't know if I fixed the problem until I get to the lake again wich is over an hour away.
