The gimble bearing is mounted in the transom assembly. It doesn't come out with the drive.
But, the gimble bearing , when it goes, makes more of a growling noise.
Stick a grease gun on the zerk fitting on the starboard side of the transom assembly and give 5 or 6 good pumps. If the bearing is the culprit, that grease will greatly reduce the noise while running. If it goes away, you found the problem. If not swaping out the drives would be a good way of ruling out the drive. If the noise is still there with the new drive, your exhaust flaps in the y-pipe are likely the cause. They make a LOT of noise when they need replacing.
While you have the drive off, reach into the opening where the u-joints go. That bearing is the gimble bearing.
