i found a small puddle of gear lube under my lower unit the other day after beeing out the night before. i pull the prop and found a bunch of fishin line wrapped up in the shaft seal.

ive been resurching on here and have learned alot about this job but have a few more questions i hope someone can answer. first is i came across alot of links for manuals on here but seemed they were all for inboard outdrives. does anyone have a link for an outboard manual? mine is 83 200 mercury with a 91 150 powerhead.

from what ive learned from what ive read on here the proper way to change the seal is to undo the locking ring remove spanner nut and pull the carrier out. i dont have the proper socket of course, i have used a punch and hammer to get those type of nuts off before (i know alot of you just cringed) without much problem. i would like the manual so i can get the torque spec and guestimate it back tight (more cringing)
or
does anyone know a way to sneak the seals out? i know i made a mini slide hammer for something similar at one time, would be easy enough to make another, drill some holes in the seal and pop out? what do yall think?

That spanner nut is tighter than you think. You're going to have to buy the correct socket for removal and install. The bearing carrier has to come out as your going to mess up the propshaft with the drill and screw method.

actually, the drill and screw worked just fine, took my time and was careful and got both seals out with no problem. i slid a small piece of alum from coke can beside where i was working and duct taped it to the shaft for some protection if i did happen to slip. i didnt slip though. screwed slide hammer and popped them on out. fixed for 30 bucks without having to buy spanner wrenches or worry about torque specs or paying through the nose. thanks for all the help though , hopefully this thread will help someone some day.

nobody knows about the manual? i would still like to have.
