Is it safe to run an inline fuel filter on a 1983 25 hp Evinrude?

I rebuilt the carburetor, fuel pump, replaced fuel lines and in the process mangled the screen inside the fuel pump cap. To correct for the loss of the screen I installed a Johnson/Evinrude inline filter as my dealer did not have any replacement screens for the cap. Is the fuel pump on the Evinrude (E25RCTE) 25 hp able to pump enough to keep the filter full and safely operate? Or should I try to find a new screen for the pump cap and remove the inline filter?

A water seperator might be a better choice, seeing as we all need them now.
Can you cut a new screen ?

What is a water seperator?

My problem is that the engine runs well at start up but then slowly stalls out after a few minutes. I thought this was due to installing a fuel filter but after removal it does the same thing. If I keep the primer bulb pumped up it will keep running. It is not leaking fuel anywhere and has hose clamps on all new fuel lines. Any ideas?

We've used small in line fuel filters to replace the old glass bowl filters on several older engines with no problems.

To filter the water out of fuel induced by ethanol.
Draw some fuel from your tank and check for water in a glass, it will form at the bottom. Additives might help such as startron.

If you have to keep pumping the bulb the pump is suspect or the carb float is sticking closed.
Disconnect fuel line and crank the engine, if fuel comes out the fuel line its likely the float is sticking , it runs the fuel out and quits.
