Stop switch not working...

Hey all, I am looking for some suggestions on where to start looking for the problem of my stop switch not working...

I have a 1983 Evinrude 15hp. I was having a problem with it not stayin running after starting up. I have rebuilt the fuel pump and it fires up first pull everytime since.(havent tested it on a lake yet though)

Now that it seems fixed, I want to repair the stop switch. I dont know where to start looking. Could it be a faulty switch? I see the two wires go down the side , then one goes to ground by the coil and the other goes into a three prong plug and seems to go to the powerpack.

And ideas/suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

Re: Stop switch not working...

The switch connects the powerpack to ground, short-circuiting the ignition and shutting off spark. Test it for continuity. It should be open to run, and closed to kill.

If the switch tests good, check the wiring for an open circuit fault, and good connections. If the wiring and switch are both good, the powerpack is faulty.

Meanwhile, you can shut it off by engaging the choke.

The switch can get oxidized to the point it quits working. You can peel the black rubber back and clean the contacts inside the switch. I've done it a couple of times. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: Stop switch not working...

I tested the switch as I was instructed, and it checked out. I will have to try a new power pack.

The motor was acting weird last summer, it would start up and run great a few times, then it wouldnt start, or it woudl start and die out... mostly it would get going again, but twice it wouldnt start up again, and I had to get towed in..

I just re built the fuel pump, and it has started on the muffs everytime since...

but perhaps the powerpack is bad?

I will order one from iboats either way.

the one on the motor has the original part number on it, so it cant hurt to replace it..

thanks!

myself, before spending the money, I'd double-check it by taking that kill wire off the switch and touching it directly to engine block.......

For sure I would clean up the terminals and make certain they are getting good contact before buying a new power pack. Those things cost money. Rick.
