Ayuh,... That's a piece of the exhaust shutter, you need a new 1....
It lives in the top of the exhaust downpipe...

Re: alpha 1 genIi

This was me exactly 2 years ago. I was so confused out where this piece was coming from.

The exhaust shutter sits inside the exhaust manifold inside the boat. The exhaust runs down and out the out drive. So this piece you found is the exhaust shutter that broke off inside the manifold and fell all the way down the exhaust pipe to where it got caught (and you found it) at the end of the exhaust line, which is inside the out drive.

You are doing good replacing the raw water pump because it was most likely ran dry which tends to burn on the exhaust shutters (flappers). BTW it is an easy and inexpensive fix. Just split the pipe where the manifold and pipe meet inside the engine bay and you will see where it sits. Go by the part first and it will make more sense.

I will get you a pic if you really need it.

There is a pic of the part and it's location in the link above.

For further clarification, head over to the adults only sticky and download the service manuals for both your engine and drive.

when you stop the boat and that rush of water hits the back,it stops the water from rushing up the exhaust and filling the cylinders with water. IE hydrolocking youe engine.
