Hey guys I just bought a used 1986 90hp johnson outboard and I was wondering what the gas mixture ratio is since I cant get a hold of the previous owner. Also if anyone knows what would cause a motor to shut off only when putting it gear, seems like it dies out on load..maybe plugs ? the guy said it was winterized and needed new plugs and wires..could that cause that ? thanks!

50:1 on the gas/oil if you don't have oil injection..
The #1 cause of dying when put in gear is carb linc-n-sync problems...very common problem often over-looked.
I would recommend an OEM manual and yes, change plugs every year with the correct Champion plugs only.

Also the boat came with ngk plugs should I switch them with the same ones or switch to champions ?

The linc-n-sync is relatively simple but requires a manual to understand it.
NGK's are fine plugs...for applications that designed the ign. system to use them...your model uses Champions only. If everything is "just right" the NGK's can burn pistons up.

If the idle speed is set too low, it can repeatedly die when put into gear. Should be set at 650-750 in gear when the boat is floating normally in the water.
