I have a 1985 305 Mericruiser. There is water in the oil. We think it is the risers. How do you test for leakage in risers?

Is this a running engine?

If it is, and the risers ARE in fact leaking, you would know it because right after you shut down, a little bit of water would run back into open exhaust valves on both sides.

Then, when you cranked it, it would hydrolock a "little".

It would eventually start because that little bit of water would be pushed by the rings. Then, while subsequently running the engine, most or all of that water would evaporate out.

If you have a LOT of water in the oil. I.E. the oil level has increased measurably, then you have a crack somewhere in the block, heads, intake manifold, etc....

You DO NOT get a LOT of water into the oil from leaking risers.....mainly because it doesn't leak into the engine while it's running. And it's not very much either.

How much water? was the oil on the dipstick extremely high? The reason I ask it that our boat had water in the oil and it turned out that we did NOT have a cracked block.

Re: Water in Oil

We changed the oil at the beginning of the season and than for testing, we used water from the garden hose. The oil we changed got milky. We have not run the engine much to see how bad it is. It is anti-freeze that runs through the engine and it is water that is in the oil not anti-freeze. Is this still possibly the risers?

We did remove the risers and looked. Is there something in particular we should have been looking for other than rust?
