I am in need of some help. I am needing to time my engine which is a 1995 EFI with VST. First of all I am confused on which system I have. I believe I have the Thunderbolt V system. For there is nothing mounted on the distributor other than the the 2 elect connections. I do not have any of the "special" tools but I do know that it the base timing has to me set. According to sources I have to plug in the merc "special tool" that looks like just a plug with a simple jumper wire in the DLC connector. If this is the case which wires are the ones that need to be jumpered? If this is not the right way then what way is it? I am always seeing of this pur/wht wire. I do have one that is part of the 4 wire connector that plugs into the distributor. Now if this is the right way then do I take a jumper wire stick it into the connector on the pur/wht wire and ground this wire? Can someone help me on this please?

thanks

It's all in the OEM service manual, and you can download it for free up in the Adults Only sticky. You need manual #17 for your enigne.

I have no clue what you are talking about, but have you checked the manuals in the "adults only" section. If it's a Thunderbolt V, you just set it to 8 degrees btdc at idle and the controller takes care off the rest.

Those pictures are from a Volvo manual, not a Mercruiser manual.
All he has to do is download the manual and it will tell him how to do the job. ON HIS ENGINE.

Sure they are from a Volvo manual, but guess what? You time a Mercruiser with that system EXACTLY the same.

So is that the system he has, or does he have something different? If it's not his system, I'll remove the photos. If that is what he has, then he can refer to the post quickly, while he's waiting for the huge manual file to download. Basically I was trying to point out that there isn't a special tool needed, just a paper clip or a piece of wire.

Re: 1995 EFI 5.7L How to time.

Finally someone has a idea of what I am talking about. Yes according to the service manual that I have already downloaded AND depending on the ignition system either TB4 or TB5 I have to "lock out the module" with either a scan tool, marine diagnostic code tool, or a "mercruiser special timing tool" which is listed as part number 91-805747A1. This is the tool that simply looks like a connector with a simple jumper wire. This tool connects to the DLC connector while the other ignition system I have to take the pur/wht wire and ground it. Now with this information can anyone be of help??

That would be correct for a TBIV, TBV have to be out into base timing mode Befoer setting the timing.

OK, I stand corrected. Regardless, I think the OP wants help with an ID of his engine. Maybe a posted pic would help use tell you which ignition system you have.
