1961 Impeller question?

I have a 1961 18hp Evinrude that I am about to change the impeller on. My question is where do I start?? Do I just take out the lower unit bolts or is there something that I have to do first?????

disconnect the shift linkage or the lower unit will never come off. You can access it from the oval shaped plate on the exhaust housing
