Quick run down, just changed the lower unit on a 1969 johnson 6 hp. Now it pops out of gear, at low or high speed.

Is there any adjustment on the shift linkage or is the clutch in this lower screwed and do I need to look for another new one?

hi.look a the page :
1. http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/32523.cfm
its a gear case
2.http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/32524.cfm
its a mid section

at this midsection is a gear leaver(19), its conected by element nr 24 with shift puler nr 65, which is conected by element nr 58 from page http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/32523.cfm
with element no 35 and this element is conected witch cradle no 40 monted by screw 41 to gearcase cover.
this is your gearcase puler.
i think element 35 is slicing by gear tension blade no 33(theare are 3 cats on it, but its not wisible on drawing).sometimes its happen tnen this element 35 can rotate a litle so its not slicing by this element 33.you have to un rotater this 35.
so disasembel gearcase by unscrewing 6 bolts no 27 and unscrew bolt 28and take gearcase cower and take the plier and rotate this element no 35

The first thing to check is the shift rod connector. The screw has to be fully removed so that the section of the shift rod can be inserted correctly. The screw must hold the rod at the area shown on the thumbnail.

I say your clutch dog and or the forward gear have worn out,if you know anything about machine work ,it can be fixed, but most nee replace the parts, could be expensive, might be bette to buy a good used gearcase

The shift detent is in the lower unit on that motor, so if it "clicks" into gear, the linkage is connected.

You didn't by any chance remove the phillips head screw when you changed the oil, did you? That is the shifter fork pivot.

If none of the above are applicable, your clutch dog and forward gear are totally worn out, big time. Especially since it jumps out at low speeds.

I did not touch the phillips screw, and it does it in forward and reverse.

Probable that the shift dog is worn.

Or the cradle that rides in the middle of the clutch dog. An inspection is in order.

How hard is it to change these parts? I have another lower unit that I know is fine internally but the housing is cracked so it is the perfect donor. I just never opened one of these up.
