Hi All,

Having a problem with my Johnson 20hp serial No {20 RL 73 A}.
Can anybody tell or show me where the choke lever connects to push the choke valve closed. Looked at the Shop. Evinrude.com, but cannot see how this works. Any suggestions would be most appreciated,

Many Thanks

Re: Johnson 20hp Carb

I have a 73 25HP, so it is pretty much the same. Can you clarify though? What you are trying to connect? Are you trying to connect the actual choke knob to the lever or are you trying to figure out the linkage?

Can you get a picture of it?

Hi CatfishMN,

Thanks for your swift reply.

I'm trying to work out how the choke knob when pulled out makes the linkage close the choke butterfly. Can't work out where the lever presses against to turn the linkage. Hope this makes sense,

Thanks again

Just off the top of my head if you look at the diagram for carbuerators at shop.evinrude for your motor:

11 connects to 49. If that doesn't do it, I might have time to look when I get home from work, but it is walleye opener and am going out of town!

Re: Johnson 20hp Carb

I had a '68 20 HP Johnson. IIRC the choke lever came through the bottom cowling, through the silencer cover, and the choke butterfly lever kinda slid into the back end of the choke knob.

I don't know if its the same, but that's how I remember it. You had to jigger with it a little (lift the lever as you slid the knob through the air silencer cover, then let the lever fall into the slot in the choke knob) but it all fit together.

Unfortunately I don't have the motor anymore, else I would take pictures for ya.

Oh, if it is just putting the plastic pull knob onto the metal lever, take off the silencer to give yourself some slack.

Hi CatfishMn,

We are on the right lines here, just can't make out how its connected or not.
maybe it pushes against something to turn it.

I'm a bit confused. Which of those two parts are you talking about? The choke shaft (part 11) has the valve connected to it so when the shaft turns, so does the valve.

Are you missing a piece?

Hi CatfishMN,

Sorry its confusing, not sure how part 49 turns part 11, the choke shaft.

Is it connected? This is what I'm trying to work out,

Hey Taff. I grabbed couple quick pics that might help you. Sorry for the bad quality, these were done with my phone.

Hope that helps! Off to fish!

Hi CatfishMN,

Thanks for taking the trouble for the photo's. Its the same setup, just can't quite make out how the lever opens the butterfly.

Anybody know where I can get the same clear photo's,

So close to solving this problem.

Good luck with the fishing,

Re: Johnson 20hp Carb

Hi All, Still trying to figure out how the choke linkage works on this 20hp of mine.
Is there anybody out there who can tell us how it works, or a clear photo or video.

Would love to get back to fishing rather than trying to fix this engine...

Many Thanks

I don't believe they are actually connected. The lever that the choke knob attaches to simply pushes on the arm that is attached to the choke butterfly.

Here is a couple of pictures I happened to have of my '68 20 HP carb.

The brass piece with the blue spring attached on the right hand side of the photo is what is attached to the choke butterfly inside the carburetor. The brass arm around it attached to the other side of the spring is what is attached to the choke lever you pull on the outside of the motor. Pulling the choke lever slides the brass piece out, which in turn pushes and rotates the choke butterfly.

Hope this helps some.

Re: Johnson 20hp Carb

your choke lever may need to be flipped over, the brass cam will slide in either side but only one side will line it up correctly,i am talking about the plastic pull lever hope this helps

Re: Johnson 20hp Carb

Got a little excited there for a min. Great photo's, but it turns out my 73 outboard must have a slightly different set-up to yours.

Checked out the choke lever itself, seems all is OK there.

This is getting very frustrating, bet this turns out to be something simple, just can't see it at the moment.

Please keep the suggestions coming in, much appreciated,

Re: Johnson 20hp Carb

the brass cam should have a strate slot screw in it with a spring washer you need to pull the screw out, slide the cam in place an look to make sure every thing lines up, if it dosent you may have the cam upside down or the choke lever or both pay close attention to the shoulder on the screw when you install it. the screw should be tight but the cam should move freely if this dosent help maybe you could post some pics of your setup
