Jumping Between Forward and Reverse

Here is the story...just bought a 84 22' Bayliner with a Volvo AQ125A from a friend. Replaces the seawater pump (leaking) and crossover. Put it in the water to test and coming off the trailer it would not shift into reverse but would rev. Tied off to the dock and ran the motor for troubleshooting. Shifted fine into forward. Finally got it to shift into reverse so I took it for a little test drive on the small inlet.

While idling forward through a no wake zone, it shifted into reverse and no matter which way I moved the throttle it revved in reverse. I shut down the engine, which of course it would not turn over again from what I am guessing is because it was stuck in reverse.

Any thoughts?

I'd start by pulling the shift cover off the outdrive.

Have someone work the throttle back and forth between forward, reverse and neutral, and see if the throttle control is working properly. With the shift cover off, you'll be able to see where the shift cable connects to the linkage to shift the upper gear box. You can disconnect the shift linkage and try shifting the drive by hand. It should shift fairly easily. In neutral the bar off the back of the upper gear box should be horizontal. When shifted into gear the bar should rotate approx. 45 deg in either direction.

Hey Capt...thanks for the info. I did what you suggested and everything seemed to work as you described. With the shift cable disconnected, you can rotate the toggle back and forth. It is a little stiff but still can do it by hand.

Hooked shift cable back up and the toggle moves the same +/- 45 degrees from horizontal. With the throttle forward the prop will hook up in one direction and free spin in the other. In reverse it will free spin both ways.

Started the engine and it will engage forward, but in reverse it will maybe spin the prop a 1/2 turn then stop.

By the way, oil level is good on the dipstick, clean, no water and does not smell burnt.

Sorry for going on and on. I am an OMC outboard kind of guy.

I'm afraid it doesn't sound good. Something isn't right in the upper gear box. I can't say what however. If it were me, I'd pull the upper gear box off and bring it too a mechanic that knows the older volvo outdrives and see what they say.

Maybe Don S would have a better idea, I think he's been busy at his real job lately however.

Once the upper is off you can inspect the ujoints and the intermediate bearings as well.

Good news, before I pulled the upper gearbox I took all the slack out of the cable/shifter, and tightened everything back in the shifter area. Took it out for a sea trail in the river and it worked good. To go into reverse still takes a little slow movement until engaged. I will work out the other issues and once I get everything operating good I will take the upper gearbox off and get it re-worked.
