Starter drive is 'screwed' up the shaft by the sudden speed of the starter motor.
Often the cause of a 'slow' starter is;
Low Battery, charge it fully
Poor connection on a battery cable, clean BOTH ends of both cables, also clean the ends of the starter to starter relay cable
Poor brush/armature connection inside the starter, disassemble starter, clean, brighten commutator, lube starter bushings, replace brushes if worn short.
Poor connection inside the starter relay, test by using one side of battery jumper cables, connect to battery side or directly to battery, strike other end to other side or directly to starter terminal, if starter turns to speed replace the relay.
