Woodruff key?

I know I will never find an Evinrude dealer open tomorrow and need a woodruff key for my 98 115 Johnson crossflow. Is there a standard size that fits that flywheel that i could pick up at an ACE hardware or is it a special key?

Not a hardware store piece ...

Why is it being replaced? If the old one sheared, that means it wasn't installed correctly. You get a couple of tries to get it right before the crank and flywheel are trashed. Flywheel taper and crank taper must be clean, oil free and dry AND the flywheel nut MUST be torqued to the correct value.

I had never sheared one in years of boating. I was warming up the motor on the muffs and I throttled back to idle. She backfired then shut off. I went to start it and the starter just spun. LOL for about 30 seconds I thought I had broken something major then I realized my flywheel was spinning on the shaft. Pulled the flywheel and sure enough the woodruff key was in pieces.

And I promised my grandaughter a boat ride tomorrow. She will probably have to wait don't think Orlando has an Evinrude dealer that is open on Sunday.

I would not risk using an unknown key from a hardware store, because of the damage that can be caused.
