changing fly wheel on 1989 21ft donzi 350 cobra

This is my very first thread but i love this site..I'm helping a friend out with his 1989 21ft donzi and it has a 350 omc cobra motor in it that has teeth broken off of the flywheel..i guess we are going to have to replace the flywheel..is it a hard job as far as the engine needing to be removed? I looked at it tonight and it looks like it has some type of bellhousing that can be taken off..can someone please help me with this? it will be greatly appreciated

Howdy,



1. pull the drive.

2. Pull the engine

3. remove the flywheel cover,remove the coupler and flywheel and replace the flywheel (& coupler) inspect the coupler very carefully. If it is questionable, replace it.

You REALLY need to have an OEM OMC service manual for all this and plan on checking adjustment and/or re-adjusting the lower shift cable.

Get yourself an alignment tool and be sure to check/adjust the alignment before you bolt the drive back on.

You wont need a complete flywheel,just a ring gear, after the flywheel is off drive the ring gear off with a punch, get a new one ,Napa or any automotive supply store, heat it up,an oven at 500 works or a torch but be carful,drop it on let cool and assemble

the starter is brand new..there is no way to do it without pulling the motor? what if i removed the outdrive and the shield that goes around it..if not i guess that we are stuck doing the engine pull..please let me know

Hey Bondo, if your going to quote me at least do it accuratly,it is the moderators job to edit posts not yours. FYI I have replaced well over a hundred ring gears over the last 40 years and used a torch to heat every one

Ayuh,.... I quoted,+ agreed with what I agree with....
I've also replaced a ring gear or 2,+ Always use an oven.... Much more even heating...
