I'm doing seals on a 1968 Johnson 65hp model vxl-14b. I have replaced the seals I marked with a red arrow #30 and #31. Does this complete the prop shaft seals? Or do I have continue taking the prop shaft apart to get to any more seals? From here I will be dropping the lower unit and replacing the seals under the impeller housing ??? Can anyone else mark on this diagram or tell me the # of the parts that I will be replacing when doing the rest of these seals. I'm kind of learning as I go and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Frank

Re: 1968 65hp Lower Unit Seals

I managed my way through the lower unit seals today..... But reassembling the lower I'm having problems lining back up my shifter and my shifting linkage. I have the controller in Neutral, but I need my lower unit in Neutral. Usually I just take the shift rod and turn it until my propeller is in Neutral, not engaging the drive shaft anymore. but with each turn of the shift rod my propeller is still engaging the drive shaft. How do I line this up so my controller and my lower are in sync with each other.

Thanks for the help!:)

This is a 1968 65hp Jonson model vxl-14B

And I have another question someone might have an answer for. I thought this was an electric lower unit. But with the disassemble of the lower today I did not find any wires or anything showing me this is electric??? Just curious if this is an electric shift model. I run type C oil in it but maybe this is one of the non electrics???

If your gearcase is the same as the diagram you have posted, it is a mechanical shift, not electric. You should not be using Type "C" gear oil - just standard 80-90wt. gear oil in that unit.

Re: 1968 65hp shift linkage sync.

Yea kinda my thoughts it is definitely the lower unit in the diagram, I always thought this model was an electric shift lower unit but with the complete disassemble of the lower I found nothing electrical at all in it. Would using type c be causing leaks?? I wouldn't think so. I can switch to 80/90. Do you have any tips for syncing the shift linkage and controller? I guess I will just be doing the guess and check method.
